Wood working planes are tools which are used for
smoothing boards or other surfaces, for forming
mouldings and removal of surplus wood. There are great
number of different sized planes suitable for various
services such as :

· Jack Plane :
It is used for coarse work. It is form 11" to 15" in length,
thus it is long and heavy enough to make it a powerful tool
for removal of considerable material on each cut. The cutting
edge of the plane iron is slightly rounded making it best
adapted for roughing. |
 |
|
 |
· Fore
Plane : It may be about 18" in length and may be used for
straightening the smooth irregular cuts of a jack plane. It is
easier to handle and may be used in the same manner as a jack
plane. The plane iron of the fore plane is sharpened to a
straight line and is set for a finer cut than that of a jack
plane. |
|
|
· Jointer
Plane : It is a long finishing plane from 22" to 24" in length
and is used to cut long, straight surfaces and to true the edges of
boards to be accurately joined. The cutting edge for a jointer plane
is ground straight and set for a fine cut. |
|
· Block Plane : It is used for planning across the grains
particularly the ends of the board. It is on of the smaller planes
and may be purchased in length of 4: to 7". It was designed to meet
the demand for a plane which may easily be held in one hand while
planning across the grains. In a plane of this sort, the iron of the
plane is turned up instead of down.

|
·
Smoothing Plane : It is a short, finally set plane about
8" in length adopted for smoothing and finishing work Because
of its small size, it will find is way into miner depressions
of the wood, without taking off a large quantity of material
components parts of a smooth plane are quit clear picture. |

|
· Moulding Plane : As the name indicates, it is designed to
make various moulding cuts.
· Rabbet Planes : It is an open-sided plane, with the plane
iron projecting slightly from the side as well as from the bottom of
the plane. There are various forms of rebbet planes available each
suitable for different types of cuts. With this tool, the edges of a
board can be cut so as to leave a rabbet or sinking like a step
against its length. Rabbet Planes are adapted to cut with or across
the grains according to the setting of the iron.
