S.   A j i t   S i n g h  R u p a a l

     "  It is great honour for Ramgarhias that a person from a small village of Mangwal, Distt. Sangrur, Punjab is serving as Professor, in Physics at Western Washington University, Bellingham WA USA."

       He is sorry (most of NRI's have the same feelings and experience) that he could not came back to attend the last rites of his beloved mother and for his respected father. He is the first person  from the village Mangwal to obtain his M.Sc. and Ph.D degree. He was able to attain this high achievements because of motivation and emotional support provided by his family.

       Dr. Ajit Singh Rupaal was born to Smt Panmesary (Panesar) Rupaal on 25th June 1933.His father S. Puran Singh Rupaal was a master carpenter. He was expert and took great pleasure in carving flowers and other intricate patterns on wood. The geometrical patterns on the doors at the Mastuana Sahib  Gurudwara, built under the guidance of Sant Attar Singh Ji, where designed by him. He trained many other young workers in such skills. Many of them called him Ustad Ji (The master Teacher).
       Dr. Ajit Singh started his education at the primary school in his village. after this he attended
Govt. middle school and Raj High School at Sangrur. After watching well dressed professors leisurely walking to teach at the nearby Ranbir College, he decided to pursue this line of work. He was very good in studies and was awarded academic scholarship based on his out standing performance in his studies, middle and high school examinations.
        After obtaining his F. Sc. degree from Ranbir College Dr. Sahib joined physics Honours School of Punjab University at Govt. College, Hoshiarpur to obtain his B.Sc. and M. Sc. degree. there he also took active part in sports, based on his excellent performance, mainly in track events, he was chosen as the best athlete in 1954. after obtaining his M.Sc. degree, he served as faculty  at Ramgrhia college, Phagwara, Punjab. Then he went back to Punjab university Physics Department as a Research Fellow. After a year in 1963 he went to join the Physics Department at the University of British Colombia. Canada to complete his Ph.D.  He spent one year as a Post-Doctorate fellow at Chalk River Nuclear Laboratory operated by the Atomic Energy Commission of Canada. where worked to improve instrumentation to detect Thermal Neutrons leaking out of Nuclear Reactors.
 

         In 1964 while still working at Chalk River he was offered a faculty position in the  Physics Department at Western Washington University located in Bellingham, Washington WA, USA.  He has taught at this university for more than forty years. During this time he served as department Chairman (very distinctive post) for eight years from 1980 to 1988.

      He has collaborated in  research work at the cyclotron facility run by university of British Colombia, Vancouver, Canada, and at Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratory at Hanford, Washington run by the U. S. Department of Energy. Dr. Ajit Singh is also socially active . From early childhood he became very interested in Gurbani after hearing Sakhi (Story) of the revival of a dead  cow when a stanza from  "Japji" sahib was recited. He always seeks guidance from Gurbani. He is member  of  Guru Nanak Sikh Gurudwara, Bellingham. He is most accepted and talented stage secretary of Gurudwara. He is regularly conducting the stage since last many years.

       He is happily married and the couple is blessed with a daughter, Amrit Kaur  and a son, Rajin Singh.
